      Distributed Hybrid Conference begins on September 19

      The 25th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (IEEE ITSC 2022) is the annual flagship conference sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society, with the theme of "Blockchain-based ITS: The Human Use of Cyber-Physical-Social Transportation Systems". This Distributed Hybrid Conference (DHC) starts from September 19 and lasts to October 7. During this period, a total of 145 Distributed Hybrid Conferences will be held in an orderly manner.

      On September 19, ITSC 2022 arranged in a distributed hybrid way and held FIVE sessions of almost all frontier research and hot topics in the field of intelligent transportation, in terms of Control of Connected and Automated Vehicles in Lane-free Environments, Smart Mobility for a Sustainable Transport Future, Control, Communication and Emerging Technologies in Smart Rail Systems, Data-driven Cooperative Sensing, Planning and Control of Connected and Automated Vehicles, Active Safety Control for Autonomous Electric Vehicles. 5 session chairs and 29 session presenters gathered to share their recent work and perspectives, related to advanced blockchain-based intelligent transportation systems.

      Today’s agendas of the sessions is announced as follows:

      Session 01

      Control of Connected and Automated Vehicles in Lane-free Environments

      Session Chair: Theodosis Dionysis (Technical University of Crete

      Introduction:

      This Special Session will focus on new perspectives of vehicular traffic for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) operating on lane-free environments. This novel concept concerns future traffic flow on motorways, highways, and urban roads, where autonomous vehicles do not abide to a lane discipline, as in conventional traffic, and can move on the two-dimensional surface of the lane-free road. The session will provide a detailed overview of recent advances on the emerging research area of lane-free environment with results that range from internal boundary control with ramp metering and trajectory planning of CAVs in directionless traffic streams, to autonomous driving in lane-free roundabouts and vehicle movement strategies inspired by adaptive cruise control systems.

      Session 02:

      Smart Mobility for a Sustainable Transport Future

      Session Chair: Xu, Meng (Beijing Jiaotong University)

      Introduction:

      Technological innovations for supporting the shared, electric, and automated mobility (SEAM), as an underpinning for radical transformations in transport sector, are changing mobility services substantially, which trigger shifts in travel and activity, fuel use and emissions, vehicle manufacturing, ownership, traffic safety, etc. Various forms of new and smart mobility services, such as ride-sourcing, bike-sharing, car-sharing, hyperloop, e-scooter, and on-demand transit, have emerged. It is anticipated that other forms of new smart mobility services will continue emerging. The availability of new smart mobility services has created a lot of opportunities and challenges in the way of moving people and freight. There are many questions to be answered in planning and operating new smart mobility services.

      Session 04:

      Control, Communication and Emerging Technologies in Smart Rail Systems

      Session Chair: Zhu Li (State Key Laboratory of Rail Traffic Control and Safety, Beijing Jiaotong University)

      Introduction:

      Rail transport networks are now reaching an important development stage worldwide. High-speed rail transport systems have achieved significant development in Europe and Asia and are beginning to become popular in many countries. Metropolitan transport will have an increasing importance in the coming years to reduce pollution and congestion in cities. Both metropolitan and high speed railways require the use of advanced signaling and control systems to guarantee and optimize their operation. For these reasons it is necessary to use modern communication and signaling systems for the intelligent control of these railways. In addition, the railway infrastructures use many supplementary systems such as remote control, video surveillance, obstacle detection and operating aids that require the intensive use of information and communication technologies. In all cases the electrical and electronics equipment must have a high quality of service, reliability and availability to fulfill railway requirements.

      Session 05:

      Data-driven Cooperative Sensing, Planning and Control of Connected and Automated Vehicles

      Session Chair: Weichao Zhuang (Southeast University)

      Introduction:

      Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are marketed for their enhanced safety, driving comfort, and time-saving potential. The connectivity of CAVs brings vast opportunities in the transportation system that promise better perception, planning and control through vehicle cooperation. The aim of the proposed session is to introduce the latest research results on the cooperative sensing and control of multiple CAVs enabled by data-driven methods, including sensor fusion, cooperative planning, coordinated vehicle control, etc. The session provides an opportunity for both academic researchers, particularly the systems and control community, and the automotive industry to acquire frontier knowledge on vehicle connectivity and automation technologies.

      Session 06:

      Active Safety Control for Autonomous Electric Vehicles

      Session Chair: Peng Hang (Tongji University)

      Introduction:

      Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, electric vehicles have significant advantages in terms of zero emissions and zero pollution. Besides, the autonomous driving technology is in favor of the driving safety advancement and eco-driving. Therefore, autonomous electric vehicles (AEVs) become a hot spot in recent years. However, there still exist some challenges for AEVs, especially under extreme and severe driving conditions, e.g., emergency obstacle avoidance, driving on low-adhesion roads, driving on large curvature roads, actuator failure, etc. For traditional fuel vehicles, some active safety technologies can improve the driving safety of vehicles, e.g., electronic stability controller (ESC), active-front-steering (AFS) control, etc. Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, the chassis configuration of AEVs are quite different. Especially for the distributed drive AEVs, more drive actuators are utilized, yielding more control strategies to advance the driving safety, e.g., direct yaw moment control (DYC). The active safety control for AEVs mainly focus on the missions of longitudinal motion control, path-tracking control, handling stability control, and rollover prevention control. The multi-objective coordinated control is a great challenge for AEVs, especially under extreme and severe driving conditions. To advance the control performance, accurate state and parameter estimation is very necessary, e.g., the estimation of road adhesion coefficient, sideslip angle, velocity, etc. Besides, due to the application of multiple X-by-wire actuators, the actuator failure is another critical issue for AEVs. The active fault-tolerant control of multiple actuators should be taken into consideration.

From 1997 to 2021, it has been held 24 times, covering 24 cities in 12 countries in Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania. The main conference of the 25th IEEE ITSC 2022 will be held in Macau, China. IEEE ITSC 2022 welcomes articles and presentations in the areas of intelligent transportation systems and automated driving, conveying new advances and developments in theory, modeling, simulation, testing, case studies, as well as large-scale deployment. The conference particularly invites and encourages prospective authors to share their recent research work, findings, perspectives, and developments related to advanced blockchain-based intelligent transportation systems.
