Introduction
Despite strict vehicle and traffic laws, they fail to keep pace with phone addiction and speeding on the road. There are various reasons for this enforcement gap, but effective countermeasures could be implemented before things get worse.
? keep pace with phr. 同步
? speeding n.
? enforcement gap phr.
? countermeasures n.
Body paragraph 1
Notably, behind the rampant violation lies social normalization of driving demeanor. For many drivers, abiding by the posted speed limit breeds a sense of frustration, while exceeding by 10 km/ h breeds no guilt; similarly, being totally unaware of digital notification is a difficult feat in this age of smartphones and social media. Therefore, road safety laws are left stubbornly flouted by those who justify their risky driving as usual and safe. The unintentional habit is not a sole reason for aggressive driving, but fluke mentality will make it exceptionally hard for some drivers to escape road accidents. Overestimating one’s driving performance, some risky drivers perceive that they will not be caught if braking at the lights location, further augmenting the vicious cycle.
? rampant adj.
? violation n.
? normalization n.
? demeanor n.
? abide by phr.
? breed v.
? guilt n.
? digital notification phr.
? feat n.
? stubbornly adv.
? flout v.
? unintentional adj.
? fluke mentality phr.
? exceptionally adv.
? be caught phr.
? augment v.
Body paragraph 2
To reverse the perpetuating ignorance of the draconian traffic laws, many societies have carried out a series of external measures, including visible increases in AI-powered surveillance cameras, speed cameras and police patrol, all of which contribute to higher certainty of punishments. But few of them hold a candle to public campaigns aimed at raising the public awareness about the risks of distracted driving; Australia, for example, launched TV ads and billboards to highlight that illegal use of phones while driving can be caught anywhere, which ultimately results in a notable drop in phone-related car accidents. Extending this message to virtual world could also allow drivers to be reconsider their seemingly habitual driving practices, which, in turn, lowers the odds of road accidents and injuries.
? reverse v.
? perpetuating v.
? draconian adj.
? visible increases in phr.
? surveillance cameras phr.
? police patrol phr.
? certainty n.
? hold a candle to phr.
? raising the public awareness phr.
? billboards n.
? phone-related adj.
? habitual adj.
Conclusion
To sum up, the reasons why existing traffic laws fail to deter risky driving can be primarily explained by social norms and fluke minds; accordingly, equal emphasis should be placed on both technological and legal solutions.
? deter v.
? social norms phr.
? equal emphasis phr.
